The Effect of Liquid Viscosity on Peristaltic Pump Flow

Fluid viscosity is a very important parameter during the selection of a peristaltic pump, as it affects the pump's speed, efficiency, power, and flow rate. When the viscosity of a liquid reaches a certain value, the pump efficiency decreases due to the limited suction capability of the tubing. At the same rotational speed, the flow rate of a high-viscosity liquid in a peristaltic pump is lower than when pumping water. The higher the viscosity, the lower the flow rate, and in some cases, the liquid may not be drawn at all.

Viscosity is a physical property of fluids, and all fluids have a certain viscosity. The viscosity of water is 1 cP. The following table provides the viscosities of other common liquids for reference:
